Psoriatic Arthritis
Psoriatic arthritis is a form of arthritis that results from a person suffering from a skin condition known as psoriasis, which is a chronic skin disease characterised by red and scaly skin rash that occur commonly on the scalp, knees and elbows. Similar to rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritic is an autoimmune disease whereby the immune system attacks its own cells. Research shows that about one-third of the patients suffering from psoriasis will develop psoriatic arthritis.

Listed below are some of the signs and symptoms of psoriatic arthritis.

  • Joint pain, often coupled together with swelling
The most common areas where psoriatic arthritis develops are the toes, ankles, knees, fingers and lower back.
  • Dactylitis
This refers to the sausage-like swelling along the entire length of a finger or toe. This allows psoriatic arthritis to be easily distinguished from rheumatoid arthritis whereby the swelling and inflammation is only at the affected joints.
  • Enthesitis
People with psoriatic arthritis often experience pain at the tendon and ligaments. This is commonly experienced in the elbow or at the heels. This is another distinguishing sign and symptom of psoriatic arthritis.
